The conference will cover a broad range of topics in theoretical and empirical economics, including macroeconomics, microeconomics, financial economics, labour economics, international trade, innovation economics, political economy, and econometrics. Special sessions on “big data” and associated methods (machine learning, social network analysis etc.) in economics are planned. The organizers also welcome proposals for other special sessions. We especially welcome economics community of the Baltic States: faculty members, postgraduate students, independent experts and government officials. The conference is also open to researchers who do not plan to present a paper subject to space restrictions.

The regular conference fee is 75 EUR. There is no conference fee for the members of the Baltic Economic Association, as well as master and PhD students of higher education institutions from the Baltic States. There will be no fee for those participating online. The participants are responsible for their travel and accommodation expenses. The working language of the conference is English.

Award for the best paper presented by a PhD student

There will be an award in the sum of EUR 500 for the best paper presented by a PhD student. The candidates for the award are not limited to the Baltic region (neither in terms of institution nor nationality), but the following rules apply:

  • paper is presented at the conference
  • all authors of the paper are doctoral students or researchers having defended their thesis in 2021.

Mini-course

In connection with the conference, we are preparing to organize a mini-course on machine learning. The course is going to be taught by Anthony Strittmatter (CREST) and will tentatively include such topics as the LASSO regressions, decision trees, neural networks, introduction to unsupervised learning for text and other unstructured data. The time, place and format of the mini-course are going to be announced separately in spring 2021.

Conference Venue and Mode

The conference is currently planned to take place in the hybrid mode, under the assumption that participants from the Baltic States will be able to travel to Tartu if desired, and everyone else will participate online. In case the pandemic restrictions will not allow any physical meetings in Tartu in June, the conference will switch to the fully online mode. The authors of all accepted papers will be notified about the conference mode in April at the latest. In case the hybrid meeting is possible, the physical conference part will take place in Delta Centre, School of Economics and Business Administration, University of Tartu, Narva mnt 18, Tartu, Estonia.
